Ministry Positions Available:

We currently have positions available for missionary associates (male), and one for a husband and wife associate team.  Associates would assist with children’s Bible studies, village-to-village outreach, and the mission high school, as well as with daily chores. Included in this is the opportunity for an individual to teach a high school class (no degree required), lead a Bible study, and/or help plan and organize outreach work, should any of these be areas of special interest or gifting.  We also offer an internship program for individuals interested in serving, but for a shorter length of time (two months minimum).

Who is this for?

If you are a senior in high school up to 30 years of age, this position is available to you.  The associate and intern programs are for someone who is interested in learning more about missions and ministry through hands-on experience. We apologize, but at this time we can only take male associates or a husband and wife team as there are no women on the mission station.

Length of service:

The associate position is a one to two year commitment. If you are interested in serving, but for a shorter length of time, the internship opportunity runs from two to six months.

Cost:

Associates and interns serve in a voluntary capacity. The first 12 weeks on the field are $75 US a week (per person), and each additional week is $50 US. The associate or intern is only required to have the first twelve weeks’ expenses raised upon arrival to the field. He will also be expected to cover travel costs to and from Belize (app. $500 to $750 roundtrip depending on where one is flying from).

About Belize:

As a former British colony, Belize is primarily an English speaking country. However, one will often hear Indian dialects, Spanish, Creole, and even German. Belize is bordered by Mexico, Guatemala and the Caribbean Sea. Belize is the size of the state of Massachusetts and is the most sparsely populated Central American country, having around 250,000 people.

About Dayspring Mission:

The mission was founded in 1999 by Patrick Evans and Jeff Shelnutt.  Patrick had just completed a term of missionary service in Nigeria, West Africa when the Lord called him and Jeff (who had been working with Patrick as an intern in Nigeria) to Belize.  After converting an old school bus into an RV, Patrick and Jeff made the drive from the US through Mexico to Belize.  In the winter of 2001 they made their home in the small Mayan Indian village of San Jose in the Toledo District of Belize.

Ministry:

We weekly hold a Children’s Bible School that averages 60 children.  In 2004 we started Dayspring Mission Academy, a high school for young men who live in the village.  The school meets four days a week with eight students enrolled this year (2005–2006).  Another focus of our ministry is Village-to-Village Outreach, in which we travel to nearby villages via horseback or horse and buggy to conduct in-home Bible studies and to offer village-wide Biblical teaching.  In addition to this work also comes the daily ministry opportunities one is offered when living in the middle of a mountainous, subtropical farming community.

Daily life in a village:

San Jose is a primitive Mayan Indian village of 800 with no electricity, an only recently established water system, and very few cars.  For this reason we see it as an ideal place to learn about the life and work of the simple missionary.  We raise our own egg-laying chickens and sheep, and use horses as our primary means of transportation.  Daily chores such as tending to the livestock, cooking meals, and washing clothes are shared by all.  Such a life of individuals working together helps one to experience Christian fellowship in a community setting.  On the average, we make a once a week trip into town to send and receive mail (e-mail and snail) and to restock on supplies for the mission station.

How to join the work:

Simply request and fill out an application for “Volunteer Service” and return it to the mission in Belize for prayer and review.  If you have questions, please feel free to e-mail: patrick@dayspringmission.com .  We also have a DVD which you may request free of charge to see some of the ministry for yourself.  May the Lord lead you in the making of this decision!
